Overview

The goal of this guide is to ensure each team's Initiatives, Projects, and Milestones — along with their properties — are defined and kept up to date precisely and completely in Pulse.

Initiative

An Initiative groups a set of projects under a shared goal, and its scope can extend beyond a single team.

When setting up an Initiative:

• Attach a descriptive Document.
• Set a precise Target Date.
• If work has already started, set the status to Active.
• Record Progress and the latest Status Update with one of:
  • On Track
  • At Risk
  • Off Track

Examples:

• Engineering / Improve Checkout Experience
• Growth / Expand Customer Base

Project

Each project has a clear outcome and a defined end date, may contain multiple related Stories and Epics, and can be broken down into a set of Milestones.

When setting up a Project:

• Define a Start Date and Target Date.
• Link the project to its parent Initiative.
• Define Milestones, each with its own Target Date.
• For active projects, record Progress and the latest Project Update: On Track / At Risk / Off Track.

• Marketing / Product Launch Campaign

Principles

• Full coverage: Every piece of work on the team's agenda — whether internal or cross-team — must be represented in Pulse.
• Consistent structure: Keep the breakdown into Initiatives, Projects, and Milestones aligned with the organization's conventions.
• Keep status fresh: Move completed projects to Done; mark cancelled or delayed projects with the right status.
• Honor Target Dates: Target Dates should reflect previously agreed-upon commitments.
